There are two types of gum disease:

  • Gingivitis – is the inflammation of the gums, usually caused by bacterial infection, as a result of plaque build-up on teeth and gums. This results in red, tender or swollen gums and bad breath.
  • Periodontitis – if left untreated, gingivitis develops into periodontitis, which affects the tissues supporting the tooth i.e. gums, bone and periodontal ligament. It can lead to a more serious infection that can destroy the bone supporting the teeth and causes the development of small spaces (pockets) between the gum and teeth, resulting in loose teeth that may eventually fall out.

The main risk factors for gum disease are poor oral hygiene (plaque and tartar build-up), smoking, diabetes, dental appliances that fit poorly, stress, genetic factors, compromised immunity and consuming certain medications. We offer Periodontal Gum Treatment to help prevent and treat gum disease.

What does treatment involve?

Scale and Polish
This involves removal of plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth using special dental instruments. If a lot of plaque or tartar has built up, you may need to have more than one scale and polish. You will also be shown how to remove plaque successfully by brushing your teeth and gums thoroughly and using floss or interdental tools to clean between teeth.

Root Planing
In some cases you may require root planing, which is a deep clean under the gums to remove any remaining tartar and bacteria from the root surface. You may need a local anaesthetic to numb the area and you could experience some discomfort for up to 48 hours following treatment.

If you have severe gum disease, further treatment such as periodontal surgery may be required. Your dentist will be able to discuss this, and if necessary, refer you to a specialist.
